when I put the USB cord in nothing happens I look in "my computer" and nothing about the camera seems to pop up even though in the bottom right hand corner it says "digital still camera installed"
yeah but these are pictures from my internal memory
The easiest and best method to download photos and video from your camera to your computer is via a little USB card reader (which are quite cheap these days).
Card readers also work for moving photos from the computer onto a card.
Plug the reader into a USB port and insert the memory card.
It will show up as a drive, and you can simply drag and drop the photos across to the folder of your choice.

If you want to try again right now without a card reader, reboot your computer. That will probably fix it.
The same happened to me, so i take the SD (memory) card out of my camera and put it into my computer. It should be a slot located on your computer for the card.

Sd cards com in standard, Micro & SDHC (high capacity) Older card readers may not read the SDHC cards. I suggest, buy a newer card reader (about $10 - $20) and try that. It sounds like your PC is waiting for the camera software to take control. Using a card reader should get it recognized as a removable drive and then you can just open the folder and move the files. Cards over 2 GB are probably SDHC and may not be recognized by older card readers.
