Canon seems to get generally good reviews on its compact cameras. Panasonic also gets ratings as good or better than Canon on some of its higher end compacts.
Nikon seems to get less than great reviews on its compacts, but it competes very closely (perhaps a little bit favorably) against Canon for DSLR's.

For point and shoot cameras Canon seems to make a decent camera for every price range. Also check out Sony, Nikon and Fuji.

For point & shoot camera I would recommend Canon or Panasonic. Good quality and provide good image quality.

for point and shoot Panasonic simply because they use higher quality sensors and lens from leica. and for slr nikon for the same reasons.
