I want to buy a Digital SLR camera, and I've noticed that Nikon's and Canon's seem to be the better ones. Why are they best and which one is better of the two?
They are both so good that the differences are minor and which you choose will be based upon which YOU like the best for your style of shooting.
Here is how you can figure out which system is best for you.
Go into a camera store and see which of the cameras fits your hands the best.
See which cameras menu is the easiest for you to use to make changes in ISO, camera resolution, white balance, mode switching and make EV changes (a camera with +5/-5 EV could be important to you).
Finally, take a SD card with you and test each camera at their highest and lowest ISO as well as when using the white balance that matches the light in the store as well as with it in the "auto white balance" mode.
Once you get home and are able to see the results on your large computer monitor, you will know which camera is better for your needs and expectations, not ours.
Take your time before you decide. Once you choose one, you will be married to that system for decades and the cost of changing to the other system will cost you nearly as much as a divorce
This choice is one that you have to research ... a lot. You are not buying a camera, but a system because in four of five years, you will be buying a new body with more advanced features, but using the lenses you have accumulating over those years.

They are both very similar, but you should decide which one you'll go with (hold a Canon/Nikon camera and then decide).
About fifty years ago Nikon came on the scene with cameras. I don't know if Canon was even in business then. Many cameras came on the scene since then but Nikon produced cameras with real glass that was ground to perfection. About 25 years ago, Canon started coming on by producing good lenses and cameras at a price that was much less than the price of a Nikon.. Canon caught up with Nikon in the market a few years ago and now they seem to be moving ahead in the number and quality of lenses that they offer for their Digital cameras and lenses. They both cost about the same, both are of about the same quality, and it comes down to what it has always come down to , personal preference.

it's a matter of preference... some people like Nikon, some Canon... if I had to choose between the two I would go with Canon... they are similar in performance, they only differ in some features and design/control... I shoot with a Sony and it seems like the optimal choice for me... they might have been a little behind before since the took over Minolta who had limited resources but were still very excellent cameras and even better, Minolta produced awesome lenses, some of which were re-branded under Leica's brand (best in the business)... Sony has unlimited research and development budget essentially, they've only been in the business for 3 years, but already created the cheapest full-frame DSLR... give them a few more years and watch them take over the market... Sony has so much money for R&D and marketing that it's scary, I really think they will be the top manufacturer in a couple of years... I've only started shooting recently and I'm betting that they will develop into a leader soon, so I decided to get along with the program now than have to switch later...

I would go with Nikon 8 mp or higher. They have precision lenses and high-quality sensors. Also, their ISO pics tend to have less noise than most. Be sure to check out Sony's line of compacts too.
