when do i know its time to get a new camera?

i have a exilim 8.1 megapixel digital camera. it takes wonderful photos, and i think it really works with me well. I am going to Europe for a school trip, and lately i have been thinking about getting a professional camera. I love taking pictures, and i love having a camera that works for me. Is there any great reason to get a new camera? What are the benefits, and why would i need one?

Of course, you best pick yourself

If you don't know why you need one now then you don't need one.

Most good P&S cameras can last up to five or so years. Some of the good ones like the Nikon Coolpix 900 series are still serviceable after ten years of use (I use a 990 with fisheye lens to make 360 degree images).

Professionals usually have to upgrade their cameras every 24 to 30 months, not because they wear out, but because the technology is advancing so fast, yet we still can use the older cameras under various shooting situations.

Your Exilim (model unknown) should not need to be replaced for another five or six years. If your Casio is a [URL Truncated] just enjoy the camera. It is a good one.

My criteria for replacing any technical device is "does it still do everything I want it to?" I replaced my P&S with a DSLR when I couldn't get the P&S to take certain types of pictures. If you find yourself saying, "I can't take that picture with this camera.", then it's time to replace it.
