Going on a Plane with a DSLR Camera?

I have a Nikon D3000 and I'm going to be flying soon. Can I take it with me on the plane and is so what should I put it in?

Thanks for the help...I don't fly very often.

I recently went to Egypt with my 50D and a couple of lenses.

I carried it on with my one piece of carry one luggage. There were no problems going through security in the UK and in Egypt, I didn't even need to take it out of the bag.

I worried a lot when I was going through security, and there were no problems.

So don't worry!

Sure, you can take it on a plane no problem.

Just buy the Nikon suggested camera bag for it and that should be sufficient to protect it from bumps and knocks.

You definitely can take it on the plane and most definitely take it with you as CARRY ON luggage. Don't ever trust the baggage handlers with anything of value. Unless you want to use it in flight, there should be no problem carrying it into the plane and stowing it in the overhead bins or under the seat in front of you. There might be an issue with you using it during the flight with all the post Christmas terror attempt. Best bet is to call ahead and make sure you can carry it on. If an airline is so screwed up that it won't let you carry it on (some airlines now say no carry on luggage), maybe you should reconsider taking it with you, but I doubt you will be prohibited from taking a DSLR with you onto the plane.

Get a bag big enough to put the DLSR, extra lens, flash (if you have them) all in one bag. It doesn't have to be an explicit camera bag with company logos on it, that advertises what's in it and begs for thieves. Just a plain black padded nylon form fitting bag with a handle and strap.

Carry it on, don't let it out of your sight, put it in a backpack with towel wrapped around it for bumps.. Hold it.

Just be sure that on the way home you keep the memory cards out of x-ray. Tell the inspector what you've got and make him / her hand inspect. I don't know for sure that x-ray will ruin your photos but better safe than sorry.

When I was traveling for television I'd always make them hand inspect because in those days, using video tape, always made us afraid that the machine would ruin our stuff.

I have lost two cameras on airplanes, and I can tell you what not to do. Do not pack your camera in your luggage. They can steal a camera out of a locked suitcase quite easily. I suggest carrying it around your neck and never letting it out of your sight. I lost one by setting it on the seat next to me while gathering my carry-ons to leave. Some guy distracted me, and probably took my camera. You can put it in your carry-on luggage if you pack it snug enough, but keep an eye on it.

Digital cameras can safely go through x-rays. It's only film cameras you need to worry about, and only if there's film in them. X-rays can fog film, but won't hurt any digital recording medium. Your memory card is perfectly safe too.
