i tried using the usb cord and the memory card it still refuses

All you have to do is use your computer skills and the computers file manager to copy all the image files from the memory card to your computer.

You can either use the USB cord supplied by your camera maker or better insert the memory card into a card reader, either the one that is on your computer or one you buy (USB 2.0 card reader ... about $10)

All your computer skills wont help you if youre connecting the camera directly by USB cable unless you have installed the software and drivers which came on the CD included with your camera. You cant even do it through Windows Explorer without installing that CD because without the included drivers your computer simply wont recognize the camera. Try til youre blue in the face (which I inagine is coming soon) it wont work.

Either install the CD which came with your camera so you can upload directly from the camera or get a compatible USB card reader which will require no additional software.

All you need to do is get your camera's SD memory card recognized by the computer. This can be done by using the USB cable to connect the camera to the computer. Read the camera's user's manual on how to do this. Some cameras need be off while connecting and it will go on automatically. Some cameras need to be turned on manually and some of those need extra buttons to be pressed to set the right mode. At this point, the camera ceases to be a camera and is now relegated to card reader functions.

Most problems are in the physical connection part wherein the USB cable does not work or the camera is not recognized. This is easily solved by getting a cheap USB card reader. To use that, get the memory card out of the camera and insert it to the card reader. The card reader in turn is connected to an empty USB slot on your computer.

When a connection is successful, you can now do whatever you want with the pictures in the camera. You can use Windows Explorer (My Computer), Finder, Konqueror or whatever File Manager your computer offers. Your memory card usually shows up as a Removable Storage Device or something to the tune of that.

If you lack the basic computer skills to navigate and manipulate the folders and files in and out of your computer, it would be easier to consult any school-aged kid.

If you still can not connect the memory card successfully, your computer must have USB connection issues. There are two possibilites. The most common culprit is having too much USB devices installed. This can be solved by uninstalling every USB device installed in the computer leaving only those that are critical for functioning. The other possibility is a faulty motherboard which can be solved by either a firmware upgrade or more drastically, by replacing it entirely, both of which are not easily done by someone holding a gun.
